The EEE Cosmic Boxes sail on the Adriatica in the Sardinian Sea
The event "Lab boat 2018" (http://www.labboat.it), the circumnavigation of Sardinia on board of the sail ship Adriatica, with the goal to involve high school students in scientific lectures and workshops, came to its end last May, 9 at Cagliari. This 21 meters sail ship had become famous thanks to the TV show "sailors by chance". The event, organized by CRS4 (http://www.crs4.it), the Sardinian Center for research, development, and higher education, in collaboration with the Sardinian universities, INFN and INAF, started last April 23 from the Cagliaritan port, with the participation, among others, of Patrizio Roversi and Paola Catapano, who hooked the audience with a funny "bingo of science". Navigation around the island, following an anticlockwise course, had started the next day, with groups of students changing at each stop. Centro Fermi contributed to the event by providing, during the tract between Carloforte and Cagliari, two small detectors for cosmic rays (called "Cosmic Boxes") from the EEE experiment. Corrado Cicalò (Centro Fermi and INFN Cagliari) and Stefano Boi, grad students in physics at the University of Cagliari and research associate to Centro Fermi, illustrated on board of the sail ship, first in the port then during navigation, the goals of the Extreme Energy Events project, the discovery of cosmic rays, and the issues that still remain open in this field. After describing the detectors' principles of operation, some measurements on the muon flux have been performed, even during navigation. These measures anticipate the ones, much more sophisticated, which will be performed next summer on board of the sail ship Nanuq, during the Polar Quest mission (http://www.polarquest2018.org). During the period on the ground, more than one hundred students, coming from the schools of Carloforte and Sant'Antioco, took part to the activities. Later on, seven students selected from the local high schools got on board, accompanied by the commander Filippo Mennuni, the responsible for the organization of "Lab boat 2018" Andrea Mameli, and the CRS4 president Annalisa Bonfiglio. The sail ship headed towards Cagliari, to end its trip with a clear success and the desire to repeat the experience.

EEE among the stars
The national contest of 16th Italian Astronomy Olympiad took place from 18th to 20th April 2018 in Bari. On April 19th, 80 students (14 to 17 years old) from Italian high schools took part to the competition at the Liceo Scientifico “A.Scacchi”, that is involved from many years in the EEE Project. While students were doing their theory and experiment exam, their teachers spent the morning at the “Castello Svevo” in Bari, listening to some specific lectures. Prof.ssa Marina Muscarella (on behalf of EEE team of Liceo “Scacchi”) talked about the aim and the mission of the EEE Project and the original contribution of the Liceo Sacchi during the last years. Prof.ssa Ginevra Trinchieri (President of SAIt - Società Astronomica Italiana), Prof. Flavio Fusi Pecci (Vicepresidente SAIt), Dr. Edvige Mastrantuono and Prof.ssa Virginia Placido (MIUR) attended the lecture and was enthusiastic about EEE. Competitors at the Liceo “Scacchi”, during the lunch break, were introduced to the EEE laboratory at school by some students of the last year. The project has aroused a lot of interest from the young ones, the teachers, and the same representatives of the SAIt. EEE is a great way to put in direct contact schools, students and teachers each other and with the world of scientific research.

During the week 03/18-23/2018, five students from the “Augusto Righi” Scientific Lyceum in Rome travelled to the Geneva Cern to participate in an initiative of the Extreme Energy Event (EEE) Project, which allowed them to experience first-hand work in a practical physics lab. The small group of students, which was accompanied by the Physics professor Francesca Sartogo, in the five days of its permanence, was able to build two of the three chambers necessary for the assembly of an EEE particle detector telescopes. The lyceum is still anxiously awaiting the possibility to host its own telescope; however, the students are still grateful to have been given the opportunity to build MRPC chambers. After their first day settling in, the students began working strenuously from Monday on.
They were divided in two groups and guided by the supervisors of the project, as the students started assembling the first chamber, which had been left uncompleted by the preceding group of High School students. The groups were alternated periodically between various tasks, such as the cleaning of the glass sheets-which would be placed internally to the chambers- and the drawing of guidance lines for the application of the internal copper lines. During this process, Physicist Raman Zuyeuski would illustrate the theoretical principles that come into action inside an active chamber and the proper procedures used when collecting and elaborating data. After having completed the first chamber, the students were able to build the second one almost in complete autonomy, except for a few crucial indications from Raman and his collaborators, Zheng Liu and Woosung Park. On Thursday, given the advance state of their work, the students were able to take advantage of the winter rest-time of the LHC and visit ALICE, an experiment which focuses on the study of the aggregation state of matter a few microseconds after the Big Bang. The students made a tour of the site guided by Despina Hatzifotiadou, who is the Outreach Coordinator of the experiment. After having worn protective helmets, the students descended 54 m below earth, to the Heart of the famous detector. However – as the students say – it was during the various meal-breaks, at the CERN cafeteria and dorm kitchen, that the students were really able to immerse themselves in the CERN experience. They were able to meet scientist and professors from all around the world, who would share their local cuisines, along with their culture, as they were studing or discussing recent scientific innovations and breakthroughs. Finally, after a productive week, the students were able to return safely home. Although tired, they were happy they had the opportunity to discover more about what goes over our heads every day (muons) and that somewhere, in a lyceum here in Italy, there is a telescopes that holds Chambers with their signatures.

Thanks to the EEE project, ten students attending the 3th year at Liceo "Cagnazzi" in Altamura (Bari, Italy) with their Math teacher Maria Rosaria Cornacchia (tutor), had the opportunity to carry out school-work alternance activities from 18th to 23th February 2018 at CERN, in Geneva . After several preparatory lessons at school, the students built some Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers, and this was an opportunity that allowed them to do the work, not only theoretical but also practical, that the physicists usually do there. During the construction process they were guided by the expert Raman Zuyeuski, by the assistant Zheng Liu and were followed by the expert Despina Hatzifotiadou for the whole period of their staying. The detectors built by the students will be transported and installed in other italian schools, as the Liceo Cagnazzi is already equipped with one EEE telescope. The experience has also allowed the students to deal with problems, find appropriate solutions, improve English communication skills and learn the importance of team working.

The XIV edition of "Workshop on Resistive Plate Chambers and Related Detectors (RPC 2018)" took place from the 19th to the 23rd of February in Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco State, Mexico). For the scientific community, this biennial event represents the opportunity to talk about the technological developments for these detectors. Researcher from Centro Fermi presented three contributions on the “Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers" (MRPC), used in the EEE Telescopes. The first contribution, with Marcello Abbrescia as speaker, described the future developments of the experiment. The second one, given by Daniele De Gruttola, presented the performance of the telescopes during 14 years of activities. In the third lecture, Silvia Pisano described the progress in the studies on eco-friendly gas mixtures, aiming to a reduction of the "Global Warming Power" of the system. The EEE Project contributed both on technological topics (detector optimization, performances, R&D) as well on scientific topics (with possible new measurements possible with these detectors).

Thanks to the EEE Project this year, within the activities organized for the activity of Alternanza Scuola-Lavoro, students of two Licei from Liguria had the opportunity to take part in the stage at the CERN of Geneva from the 25th of February to the 3rd of March. The project “Extreme Energy Events (EEE) - La Scienza nelle Scuole” is a special research activity invented by professor Antonino Zichichi. Funded and managed by “Museo Storico per la Fisica e Centro Studi e Ricerche “Enrico Fermi”” of Rome with the collaboration of CERN, INFN and MIUR, it focuses on the study and the research of the cosmic rays, with the fundamental aid of all the students and teachers of the Secondary Schools that take part in the project. The two Licei are amongst almost 100 schools, 52 of which have in their buildings a telescope for the measurement of tracks of muonic particles that constitute the majority of the cosmic rays. Ten boys and girls, half from Liceo Chiabrera - Martini of Savona and half from Liceo Calasanzio of Carcare (SV), took part, at CERN, under the supervision of the teachers and the tutor Stefano Grazzi of Centro Fermi, in the building of the Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC), which constitutes the very heart of the revelator in the telescopes. The activity of Alternanza Scuola-Lavoro allowed the students to experience the collaboration with researchers from all over the world and to live the true atmosphere of CERN, one of the most important venues for the studies on the elementary particles. Besides, apart from the work in the laboratory, they visited the Synchrocyclotron (SC), the first accelerator at CERN, which accelerated protons at 600 GeV and the relevator of the ALICE experiment at LHC (the Large Hadron Collider) where are present, among the others, pieces of equipment similar to those built by the students themselves. They saw also the “Globe” and the “Microcosm”, the two permanent exhibitions at CERN. The international environment gave students the opportunity not only to improve their language skills in English, but also to test their ability to adapt to new situations and solve problems distant from their everyday lives. The week ended with the interview to Maria Fidecaro, one of the most experienced scientists at CERN, who kindly answered the questions of the young students, encouraging them to pursue their goals and never lose their curiosity for science and the enthusiasm that they showed in those days. Here are some impressions of the boys and girls when they came back at school: «I still can't believe to have had such an incredible experience. CERN is the living proof that a collaboration between the nations, in a climate of peace and reciprocal faith, is possible and very effective, this is the only way to make science and share it with all the people we can reach». And also: «What a week! Finally we had the opportunity to practice all the theory that we study at school on books and we also discovered a lot of new things. We have interacted with people of totally different cultures and habits and it taught us to collaborate and work with them: there were people from Belarus, China and South Corea and yet our commune aim helped us joining our strengths to reach our aim. It has been wonderful to overcome our differences to get the work done».

In the context of the EEE Project, a strong scientific and cultural relationship has been established between IIS Staffa of Trinitapoli and the Moscow Chemical Lyceum. Promoted by the Russian scientist Vladimir Peskov, already in September 2017 the school in Puglia hosted a group of russian students and teachers: in that occasion they visited the EEE Telescope, built by the Staffa students at CERN, and they were impressed by the experiment. On return, from the 16th to the 23rd March 2018, the Russian school invited a group of teachers and students from Trinitapoli. After being first in Moscow , they moved to Zvenigrad, 50km from the russian capital. The group, composed of Carmine Gissi, director of the Staffa, two teachers, Giacomo di Staso e Margherita Lafata, and fifteen students, class IV-A of the high school, attended for a week laboratories of mathematics, physics, biology, history and literature. They could also visit the Red Square and the Kremlin in Moscow. Marcello Abbrescia, national coordinator of the EEE Project, prepared the scientific program and the lectures were given by Olga Starunova, Anna Dronzik, Georgy Baranow and by Fabrizio Coccetti, researcher of Centro Fermi. The week ended with certificates and awards by Sergey Semenov, director of the Moscow Chemical Lyceum.

Within the “Extreme Energy Events – Science inside schools” (EEE) project, the Liceo Casiraghi in Cinisello Balsamo (Milano) is carrying out an advanced and stimulating program in its Physics Lab. Under teacher’s supervision, students assembled few “Cloud chambers”, small gas detectors able to track cosmic rays crossing the chamber volume acting as a magnifying glass for elementary particle. More sophisticated detectors allow the young scientists to detect and study natural radioactivity of surrounding materials. During last year, activities extended to data analysis of the large array of EEE telescopes distributed over the whole Italian territory. Supported by researcher from Centro Fermi, CERN and INFN, the school is also considering a crowdfunding to contribute to the installation of a telescope inside the institute. In collaboration with the University of Milano Bicocca, Physics Lab’s students (about 40 young “researchers” 16-18 years old) will have the chance to attend to scientific conferences, establishing a first contact with professional research.
