Si è conclusa il 9 maggio a Cagliari la manifestazione “Lab boat 2018” (http://www.labboat.it), una circumnavigazione della Sardegna a bordo del veliero Adriatica, con lo scopo di coinvolgere studenti di scuole medie e superiori in laboratori e lezioni di argomento scientifico. Questa imbarcazione a vela di 21 metri era divenuta famosa grazie alla trasmissione televisiva “velisti per caso”. La manifestazione, organizzata dal CRS4, centro di ricerca, sviluppo e studi superiori in Sardegna (http://www.crs4.it), in collaborazione con le università sarde, l’INFN e l’INAF, era cominciata il 23 aprile presso il porto del capoluogo sardo, con la partecipazione fra gli altri di Patrizio Roversi e Paola Catapano, che avevano appassionato il numeroso pubblico con una simpatica “tombola della scienza”. Il giorno successivo era cominciata la navigazione intorno all’isola in senso antiorario, con a bordo gruppi di studenti che si alternavano nelle varie tappe. Alla manifestazione ha dato il suo contributo anche il Centro Fermi, che ha messo a disposizione nella tappa Carloforte - Cagliari due piccoli rivelatori per raggi cosmici (Cosmic Box) dell'esperimento EEE. Corrado Cicalò (Centro Fermi e INFN Cagliari) e Stefano Boi laureando in fisica dell’Università di Cagliari, associato al Centro Fermi, hanno illustrato a bordo del veliero, prima in porto e poi in navigazione, le finalità del progetto Extreme Energy Events, la scoperta dei raggi cosmici e le problematiche ancora aperte. Dopo aver descritto i principi di base del funzionamento dei rivelatori sono state effettuate alcune misure, anche in navigazione, sul flusso di muoni. Queste misure sono solo una anticipazione di quelle più sofisticate che verranno effettuate a bordo del veliero Nanuq, la prossima estate nei mari del nord, nell’ambito della missione Polar Quest (http://www.polarquest2018.org). Nella fase a terra, i ragazzi coinvolti in questa tappa sono stati più di cento provenienti da scuole medie e superiori di Carloforte e Sant’Antioco. Successivamente sono saliti a bordo con il comandante Filippo Mennuni, sette studenti selezionati da alcune scuole superiori della zona, oltre al responsabile dell’organizzazione di “Lab boat 2018” Andrea Mameli e al presidente del CRS4 Annalisa Bonfiglio. Il veliero ha fatto rotta verso Cagliari, per concludere la sua rotta con un indiscusso successo e il desiderio di ripetere l’esperienza.

The EEE Cosmic Boxes sail on the Adriatica in the Sardinian Sea
The event "Lab boat 2018" (http://www.labboat.it), the circumnavigation of Sardinia on board of the sail ship Adriatica, with the goal to involve high school students in scientific lectures and workshops, came to its end last May, 9 at Cagliari. This 21 meters sail ship had become famous thanks to the TV show "sailors by chance". The event, organized by CRS4 (http://www.crs4.it), the Sardinian Center for research, development, and higher education, in collaboration with the Sardinian universities, INFN and INAF, started last April 23 from the Cagliaritan port, with the participation, among others, of Patrizio Roversi and Paola Catapano, who hooked the audience with a funny "bingo of science". Navigation around the island, following an anticlockwise course, had started the next day, with groups of students changing at each stop. Centro Fermi contributed to the event by providing, during the tract between Carloforte and Cagliari, two small detectors for cosmic rays (called "Cosmic Boxes") from the EEE experiment. Corrado Cicalò (Centro Fermi and INFN Cagliari) and Stefano Boi, grad students in physics at the University of Cagliari and research associate to Centro Fermi, illustrated on board of the sail ship, first in the port then during navigation, the goals of the Extreme Energy Events project, the discovery of cosmic rays, and the issues that still remain open in this field. After describing the detectors' principles of operation, some measurements on the muon flux have been performed, even during navigation. These measures anticipate the ones, much more sophisticated, which will be performed next summer on board of the sail ship Nanuq, during the Polar Quest mission (http://www.polarquest2018.org). During the period on the ground, more than one hundred students, coming from the schools of Carloforte and Sant'Antioco, took part to the activities. Later on, seven students selected from the local high schools got on board, accompanied by the commander Filippo Mennuni, the responsible for the organization of "Lab boat 2018" Andrea Mameli, and the CRS4 president Annalisa Bonfiglio. The sail ship headed towards Cagliari, to end its trip with a clear success and the desire to repeat the experience.
